This week we explore how the Holy Spirit empowers the church to be witnesses for Jesus, even in the face of opposition. Ministry, in its many forms, requires the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives—bringing love, healing, and freedom. It’s not just about public acts but also about faithfully following Christ in everyday life. Acts 5:12 shows the impact of authentic, Spirit-empowered ministry, reminding us of the importance of partnership in helping people follow Jesus.

The book of Acts shows how the early church moved forward despite growing persecution and opposition. When faced with threats, the disciples’ first response was prayer—not to ask for an escape from their troubles, but for courage to face them, recognising God’s sovereignty over all things. Their belief in the power of prayer made it the core of their lives, the foundation for everything they did. As we reflect on this passage, we are challenged to make prayer our first response and central focus as we seek

In today’s passage a man is healed, a crowd gathers, and Peter preaches. Peter stands up in front of his adversaries and uses this first healing to proclaim that the Jesus whom they killed was indeed the suffering servant and the Christ—the long-awaited Messiah, come to save them. What we are exploring in this passage is how the Holy Spirit is able to inspire spiritual boldness as we explore Pete’s response to what God is doing.

During his earthly ministry, Jesus was regularly approached by people asking for healing, and He healed them. This morning’s passage is significant because this is the first healing that is recorded by Jesus’ people through the power of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts So, one of the key questions for today’s teaching is this - can he do the same today?

In this message, we explore how the Holy Spirit brings the church to life, making us God’s people together. The church belongs to Jesus, and we are called to follow, serve, and love His church as He did. A true Spirit-empowered church isn’t about religious traditions but the life of Jesus in us, shown through our joy and devotion. We also celebrate baptism, a powerful symbol of new life in Jesus, as believers publicly declare their faith and join the Spirit-filled community of God’s people.

In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples, fulfilling Jesus’ promise and equipping them to spread the gospel globally. The gift of tongues signifies the removal of barriers of location and language. Just as the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus for ministry at His baptism, He now empowers believers to continue Jesus' work. This session invites us to explore how the Holy Spirit's presence empowers us to follow Jesus' ministry today and encourages us to seek God's guidance for our current context at CBC.

This series, "Empowered by the Spirit," begins by exploring how the book of Acts continues the ministry of Jesus, seamlessly linking with Luke’s Gospel. As we delve into Acts, we aim to apply its lessons to our own context, addressing challenges of church growth and capacity. Key themes include the power of prayer, reliance on the Holy Spirit, and the importance of community. The opening chapter highlights the need for waiting on God, embracing His promises, and relying on the transformative power of the Ho

Ch’s 10-12 belong together, and concern one revelation n given to David. One way to teach these chapters is to highlight the key questions that are raised about God. Does God care for this people, and will he always have their best interest in mind? Is God so great that he can do whatever he pleases whenever he pleases with whomever he pleases? Does God allow his people to suffer, even to the point of death? What does this say to us about resurrection and eternal rest?

In this chapter, we witness a clash of worldviews. Daniel and his friends, aware that their presence in Babylon is due to their nation’s actions and God’s sovereignty (1:2), see themselves as representatives of God’s ultimate authority. They uphold the belief in one true God who rules over all. Conversely, Nebuchadnezzar and his astrologers represent their own gods. The real conflict in Chapter 2 is not between Daniel's group and Nebuchadnezzar’s but between the God of Israel and the gods of the nations.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at Crofton Baptist Church (details here) for our Sunday Service starting at 10:30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space in our car park or nearby streets and to find a seat before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will be wearing a Welcome lanyard.

After the service, we serve tea, coffee, and biscuits. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and connect with our community. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets in the main foyer.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10:30am with a warm welcome from one of our team members. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our band. We typically have 2 or 3 songs lasting approximately 20 minutes. Sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the bible. Sometimes people share things that they believe God is saying to the whole church family. This might seem strange the first time you hear it but it’s all part of our connecting with God. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church, followed by a short 'all aged' talk that engages the whole church family. One of our leaders will then give a sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We then finish with worship once again, singing 3 or 4 songs. Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.

What about my kids?

We have a great programme lined up for kids of all ages:

  • Creche (0 months to 3 years). Children under 6 months are welcome but must be accompanied by their parent/carer at all times.
  • Starters (3-5 years / preschool age)
  • Followers (6-8 years)
  • Pilgrims (9-11 years)
  • Intrepid (12-14 years)
  • Next Gen (15-18 years)

Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome and songs. We really value worshipping God all together as a family. At the end of the notices someone will announce that it’s time for the younger members to go to their various groups. You will need to go with your children to their groups and register them as part of our child safety policy.

The kids group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, bible stories, testimonies, praying, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play. Our leaders will bring back the children during the final set of worship songs.
